Instrument Remover

Choose the instrument to remove

Everything you check starts muted in the result. Guitar or piano needs a six-stem split, drums or bass a four-stem split, and vocals alone a two-stem split; Lacuna picks the right one.

Remove your part and play along with the rest of the band

Pick the instrument you play. AI splits the song into stems and mutes your part, so you can export a minus-one backing track and play it yourself.
How it works

From the original song to your backing track in three steps

1STEP 1

Upload the song

Sign in and add an MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A or OGG file up to 50 MB and 12 minutes.

2STEP 2

Pick your instrument

Check guitar, piano, bass, drums or vocals. Check more than one for a track without several parts, like guitar and vocals for a play-and-sing version.

3STEP 3

Export the backing track

Your part opens muted next to the other stems. Turn it back up as a guide if you like, then use Export remix to download the backing track.

What you get

Remove an instrument from a song, keep the arrangement

AI source separation estimates each part of the finished mix, so the band keeps playing when your instrument drops out.

Five parts to choose from

Vocals, drums, bass, guitar and piano each get a stem of their own, and whatever is left, such as strings, horns or synths, shares the other stem. Check one part or several before you start. Lacuna picks the split the job needs: two stems for vocals alone, four for drums or bass, six for guitar or piano.

Your part starts muted

The instrument you checked is already off when the result opens, and the rest of the arrangement plays as recorded, at its original tempo and key. Press play and you are listening to the minus-one track. Check guitar and vocals together for a play-and-sing version; every part you picked starts muted the same way.

Keep a quiet guide

Learning a solo or a tricky voicing? Unmute your part and pull its volume down, so you can still hear it under the band while you practice. Export remix uses the current settings, so the backing track can keep the guide at exactly that level. Mute it again when you are ready to record the real take.

WAV remix, MP3 or WAV stems

Export remix renders the backing track in your browser as a WAV file, with no extra credits. Each stem, including the part you removed, downloads as MP3 or WAV in the format you picked before processing. Keep the isolated part as a listening reference, or take every stem into a DAW and build your own arrangement.

Split lead and rhythm guitar

In a band with two guitarists, muting the whole guitar stem takes your bandmate's part out too. Add Lead & rhythm guitar under Detailed splits and the guitars come back as lead, rhythm and the rest of the song in their own tab, for extra credits shown in the estimate. Mute only the part you play, then export the remix.
Who it's for

Minus-one tracks for players who learn by ear

Start from the exact recording you want to play, not a cover from a backing track library.

Guitarists
01

Guitarists

Mute the guitar and play the rhythm part or the solo over the original band. Solo the guitar stem first to hear the voicings.

Pianists and keyboard players
02

Pianists and keyboard players

Take the piano out and practice the part against the real groove, with the bass and drums exactly where they were recorded.

Singers who play
03

Singers who play

Remove the vocals and your instrument together, then perform both parts over what is left for a cover or a live set.

Music teachers
04

Music teachers

Prepare a minus-one track for each student's instrument from the song they asked for, and keep the isolated part as a listening reference.

Backing tracks

A backing track maker for the songs you actually want to play

Backing track libraries only cover songs someone has already re-recorded. Here you start from the original recording and remove your own part.

01

Practice at home

Play along with the original band and production instead of a MIDI rendition of the song.

02

Record a play-through

Record your instrument over the minus-one track for a cover or play-through video, then compare it with the isolated original part.

03

Rehearse with a missing player

Mute the parts your band plays live and keep the one nobody covers, so rehearsal still sounds complete.

FAQ

Instrument remover questions

Upload the song, check the instrument you want to remove and start the separation. When it finishes, that stem is already muted in the mixer. Use Export remix to download the song without it.

Vocals, drums, bass, guitar and piano. Strings, horns, synths and other instruments share the other stem, so they can be removed only as a group.

Yes. Check every part you want gone before you start. All of them open muted, and you can still mute or unmute any stem after the split.

Yes. Unmute your stem and lower its volume in the mixer. Export remix uses the current settings, so the backing track keeps your part at that level.

Overlapping parts, such as a keyboard pad under strummed guitar, can bleed into each other's stems. Solo your stem before you rely on the backing track and check what is left in the other parts.

Not in this tool. Download the backing track and open it in Audio Speed Changer to slow it down, or Song Key Changer to move it to another key.

Sign in to upload. Free accounts get monthly credits that cover a separation, and the estimate next to the button shows the cost before you start. Exporting the remix runs in your browser and uses no extra credits.

MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A or OGG, up to 50 MB and 12 minutes per file. Stems download as MP3 or WAV; the exported backing track is a WAV file.
